HOW CAN HR DRIVE INNOVATION?

HR plays a crucial role in cultivating a culture of innovation as it always starts with the workforce. Creating a working environment where innovation is embedded throughout the organisation is key.


But why is innovation so important?


Innovation is all about driving organisational growth and development. This involves employee dedication, collaboration and willingness to create new ideas.


There are 3 techniques you can implement to drive innovation throughout your organisation:


1. Create an innovation training program


An innovative training program will equip employees with the tools they need to become more proactive and innovative. This will enable employees to value the importance, thus motivate them.


These programs can be in the form of workshops, videos, speakers and many more. We’d recommend holding these sessions on a regular basis to ensure it’s embedded in the organisational culture.


2. Re-design the employee experience


We have talked about embedding innovation throughout, but how can we do that?


One way is to re-design the employee experience; this doesn’t have to be a drastic change, just effective. This can be incorporated by creating a dedicated place where employees can share their ideas or create a more open environment.


For example, the use of collaboration portals or shared workspaces.


An important thing to note is that whatever the change is, it needs to be ‘accepted’ by your employees through effective communication and change management strategy’s.


3. Collaboration, Collaboration, Collaboration


Collaboration is an extremely important aspect of innovation. An organisation cannot succeed with just one individual, as the saying goes ‘it takes a village’. Therefore, it is crucial that all employees are encouraged to collaborate with one another, share and adapt ideas together.


One way to create a more collaborative environment is to have an open plan office; this will enable employees to work more closely and encourage conversations throughout.


Another way would be to create social events, this will create a more engaged team as they will get to know each other, become more comfortable in sharing ideas and be more eager to collaborate.


These are just a few practical ways to drive innovation through HR.


Remember that the techniques outlined should be tailored to your organisation, as every organisation differs and there isn’t a ‘one size fits’ all way to implement innovation.
